Digital PPE

What is digital PPE?

Digital PPE is personal protective equipment that brings technology to workplace safety. Unlike traditional PPE, which protects passively, digital PPE is an active part of the operation: it logs presence, sends emergency calls, and generates auditable evidence, connecting people in the field to the company's control room.

Traditional PPE protects passively: a hard hat absorbs impact, gloves insulate, and earmuffs cut noise. Digital PPE adds an active layer to that protection. It senses its surroundings, communicates, and reacts: it warns when someone approaches a high-risk area, sends a call for help with the person’s location, and logs the events that matter during each shift.

In practice, digital PPE usually takes the form of a badge or an accessory attached to the uniform, so it doesn’t change the way people work. Field workers keep doing their jobs as usual. The difference shows when something doesn’t go as planned: the emergency button alerts the control room within seconds, and help arrives guided by the person’s exact location.

For workplace safety management, digital PPE changes the kind of information available. Instead of piecing an incident together from people’s accounts, the team has auditable evidence of the time, the place, and the response. That supports compliance with Brazil’s NR safety standards (NRs), leads to better safety talks, and provides an objective basis for improving procedures.

One more requirement sets digital PPE apart from consumer electronics: industrial-grade ruggedness. That means battery life for long shifts and resistance to impact and dust. In areas with explosive atmospheres, it also means Ex certification, which allows the device to operate where ordinary equipment is not permitted.

The Smartbadge is PHYGITALL’s digital PPE: a smart badge with Ex certification, an emergency button, and real-time location, with no audio or video recording. The device is approved by INMETRO (Brazil’s certification body) and ANATEL (Brazil’s telecom regulator).
